This web site would not be complete without a recognition and thanksgiving for Duncan’s tireless work for the restoration of St Mary's.
In 2002, a document was written outlining a vision for St Mary’s Church building to be one suitable and reordered to meet the spiritual and community needs of this area in the future years. But there were problems and challenges to overcome.
The church had not been redecorated since 1963; the heating and lighting needed updating; there was a desire to provide separate, suitable accommodation for children’s work , and “drop in” counselling facilities to support families; greater flexibility was desirable to enable a variety in worship; kitchen and toilet facilities needed to be improved; the landmark clock in the tower required electrification, instead of manual winding; additional damp free storage space was requested etc etc
The church members were delighted when Duncan accepted the challenge to bring all these elements into being. He was appointed Chairman of the Restoration Committee and over the next years applied himself with total dedication to the task.
Architects were appointed and under Duncan’s able and precise direction, plans and drawings were drawn up for reordering. With his enthusiasm and expertise in so many fields, Duncan showed his remarkable leadership and resourcefulness. He investigated and wrote many letters to pursue grants and funding.
Problems were overcome. If someone said it couldn’t be done, Duncan researched the topic endlessly….on the web, writing for brochures and information from experts; talking to manufacturers; visiting sites to view building works. There was always a solution or another way that Duncan found to progress the restoration. His knowledge on so many detailed subjects was amazing. His vision and latent approach were inspiring to the rest of the Committee and PCC.. His doggedness and tenacity to complete the task when faced with the frustrations of negative thinking from those in high Church places, was wonderful to behold. Churches are subject to rules and regulations, which are unbelievable to business people in the real world, but which cause the wheels of progress to turn very slowly.
But under Duncan’s leadership, progress was made. Up to a few weeks before his death, Duncan could be found in this very building questioning and discussing details with contractors who were tendering for work within the Restoration schedules. Although he was a very ill man, his mind was as sharp as ever and he still sought to obtain the very best for his church.
Sadly, he was unable to actually see the first fruits of his labours. In early September 2008 work began and by the end of October2008, the first stage of redecoration, heating and lighting should be complete. Then the next stages can be considered subject to funding.
Without Duncan, this would not have happened. A special “Thank you” then ….to Duncan, for all his dedication and love for this church,…..may the Lord God bless him, and may the people of this church and this community gives thanks in the future for all that Duncan achieved in this place.
